Australian Sports Commission takes the disc golf challenge

20121017-213754.jpgThe Victorian and Tasmanian branches of the Australian Sports Commission joined up in Hobart for a few days of information sharing and team bonding. The Hobart office were keen to show their Victorian colleagues one of Hobart’s sporting treasures, so they spent an afternoon at Poimena Reserve in Austins Ferry, playing the oldest disc golf course in Australia.

Discology’s Richard Sampson ran a short disc golf skills clinic for the staff followed by a mini competition on the front 9.

Richard’s comment “the Australian Sports Commission’s Hobart office has been very supportive of our efforts to develop disc golf in Greater Hobart, it was great to help them out and also introduce them to the sport and the Poimena course first hand. The Victorian staff were extremely impressed with the course and the sport. It was encouraging to hear such positive feedback about disc golf from professionals who deal with sport and physical activity in the community on a day to day basis.”

Disc golf clinics at Guildford Young College

Year 11 students at Guildford Young College in Glenorchy have been receiving disc golf clinics with Discology’s Richard Sampson. Around 35 students received the coaching, along with PE teacher Ramon Jacobs and a teacher in training.

The first 90 minute skills session took place on the College oval and then students had a second 90 minute session at Poimena Disc Golf Course.

Richard’s comments “Taking disc golf into schools is such a great way to develop new players and generate awareness. Hats off to Guildford Young College for bringing alternative sport into their PE curriculum. 2 x 90 min sessions meant the students received a good dose of disc golf, learning some essential skills, the rules of the game and playing the game on a real course. Hopefully some of theses students will continue to play.”

Discology sponsors the 2012 Australian Disc Golf Championships

Discology - official sponsor of the 2012 Australian Disc Golf ChampionshipsThe Australian Disc Golf Championships is Australia’s premier tournament and Discology is thrilled to be part of this fantastic event. This year’s competition is happening in Drysdale, Victoria, 2-4 November, and promises to be a first class experience for players.

Geelong Disc Golf Club and Melbourne Disc Golf Club are co-hosts and they certainly know how to put on a good show.

The Drysdale course is a beauty, it has a little bit of everything – booming drives, shorter technical throws, tight wooded areas, open fairways, water hazards, elevation, ace runs, risk and reward.

The tournament is two months away and it is almost sold out already! The maximum field is 72 players and at time of writing there are only about 12 spots remaining.

Discology heading off to the PDGA Worlds in North Carolina

Discology owner, Richard Sampson, will be competing at the 2012 PDGA World Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 14-21 July.

Over 1000 pro and amateur players are expected for this week long competition, being played over 14 courses.

“To say I’m excited would be a bit of an under statement” said Richard.

“This is my first World Championships and also the first time I’ve been back to the USA since I first played disc golf at Pease Park in Austin, Texas in 1995.

I’ll be competing with my great mate and fellow Tasmanian, Harvey Yarnall. It’s gonna be a wild ten days and I can’t wait.

I’ll be playing in the Open division and will tackle three courses:

Richard Sampson

Renaissance – Moderately hilly, long, technical pro-level course with some heavily wooded holes and a few open holes. A monster with OB, mandos, ravines, creeks and diabolical pin placements. 7,282’(61)/9,407’(70)

Nevin – Tightly wooded, long, technical pro-level course with some elevation changes. Nicknamed The Nightmare, for good reason. 7,214’(63)/8,397’(68)

Bradford – Moderately hilly, moderately wooded pro-level course. Water in play on five holes. Minimal OB. 5,590’(55)/6,810’(58)
